ITINERARY

5 Days | 4 nights Gorilla Tracking in Virunga National Park

Day 1: Transfer to King’s Palace in Nyanza

After your clearance at Kigali international Airport, you will be welcomed by our driver guide and he will brief you about the 5 days of gorilla tracking and then after that, you will hit the road driving to south of Rwanda in Nyanza district to visit the king’s palace. Here, you will learn more about the pre-colonial era in Rwanda and also get more knowledge about the Rwandan culture. You will drive to Butare district to learn more about the first museum which was created by the Belgian government. Dinner and overnight at Gisakura Guest house.

Day 2: Transfer to Nyungwe National Park

After having your early morning breakfast, you will drive to Nyungwe national park for chimpanzees tracking. After reaching at the park’s offices, you will register and then head straight to your lodge for check in and resting. In the Afternoon, you will be briefed about the chimpanzee tracking by the park rangers who will lead you in the forest for tracking chimpanzees while seeing different types of bird species on your way. You will have a canopy walk which is about 200 meters long above the forest. You will have dinner and overnight at Nyungwe Nziza Eco lodge.

Day 3: Boat Ride on Lake Kivu

You will wake up very early in the morning and have your breakfast and then drive to Lake Kivu for a boat ride. You will enjoy a boat ride while experiencing a wonderful scenery of many Islands around the lake plus seeing different types of bird species. During the boat ride, you will have a chance to fish in one of the great lakes of East Africa and also have a beach walk along the lake and if you love watching birds, this will be the best spot of taking photos. After the boat ride, you will drive to the volcanoes national park for gorilla tracking. You will have lunch at en route and then proceed to the Virunga national park dinner and overnight at Le Bamboo lodge/ La Palme hotel.

Day 4: Gorilla Tracking

Today, you will wake up at 5:30am and have your breakfast while preparing for your first day of gorilla tracking. After your breakfast, you will get things which you will use during and also go with your packed lunch. Don’t forget to come with your jacket, camera, a hut, a face mask on your during tracking and after reaching at Kinigi headquarters for briefing at 6:30am, you will learn more about different types of gorilla families and also their behaviors. After the briefing, you start your trek which will take 2-6 hours whereby on your way, you will enjoy the beautiful sights and sounds of the rainforest. After enjoying an hour stay with the gorillas, you will return to the starting point where you will meet your driver guide and drive you back to lodge for resting. Dinner and overnight at Virunga lodge.

Day 5: Hiking Dian Fossey’s Forest

This forest was named after Dian Fossey who was an American Anthropologist, Primatologist and Zoologist who liked to study more about mountain gorillas. She put up a research center in the forest to learn, treat gorillas and also to protect them from human beings who were killing them and also poaching them. In 1985, Dian Fossey was murdered by unknown people and she was buried near her research center. You will visit her grave to learn more about her works and research she made about mountain gorillas and chimpanzees. After the trek, you will meet your guide who will drive you back to Kigali and transfer you to the airport to take your flight back home to meet your family.
