ITINERARY

12 Days | 11 Nights Birding safari in Southern Tanzania

Day 1: Dar-es-salaam to Selous Game Reserve

Today, you will meet your birding guide who will brief you about the 12 days safari in the southern Tanzania and after that, he will drive you to Selous game reserve and you will arrive there during lunch time at Rufiji River lodge and have lunch. After having your lunch, you will have an exciting boat ride on the river while seeing different types of bird species and also meeting with hippos and crocodiles along the trip. Some of the local birds you will see are fish Eagles, Palm nut Vultures, Yellow billed stork, Kingfishers etc. Dinner and overnight at Rufiji River lodge.

Day 2: Full day game drive Selous Game Reserve

After having your morning breakfast, you will head to Selous game reserve for a full day game drive looking for different types of bird species such as Fish Eagles, Palm nut Vultures, Yellow billed stork, Kingfishers, Pel’s fishing owl rare, White fronted bee eater, Spur winged lapwing, African wattled lapwing, African spoonbill, Common white-headed Vulture etc. During the game drive, you will see some animals such as antelopes, lions, greater Kudu, water bucks, southern reed bucks and bush bucks. Dinner and overnight at Rufiji River lodge.

Day 3: Nature walk & birding Selous Game Reserve

Today, you will wake up very early to go for a guided nature walk through the bush and along the river banks with the protection of an armed ranger to explore fauna and flora of the game reserve. You will return to the camp for breakfast and then later head to the park for birding watching experience whereby you will see different birds such as Fish Eagles, Palm nut Vultures, Yellow billed stork, Kingfishers, Pel’s fishing owl rare, White fronted bee eater, Spur winged lapwing, African wattled lapwing, African spoonbill, Common white-headed Vulture etc. Dinner and overnight at Rufiji River camp.

Day 4: Transfer from Selous to Mikumi national park

After having your breakfast, you will drive towards Mikumi national park driving through Selous game reserve from Eastern region to west into Morogoro and Mikumi. Mikumi is known as a home of hills, plains and also the park forms the famous Miombo woodlands. Here, you will spot several special and rare wildlife which can not be seen anywhere in Tanzania. You will have unscheduled stretching and birding stops en route in order to see some birds and arriving in time for dinner and overnight at Tan-swiss lodge.

Day 5: Bird Miombo woodland & Mikumi national park

After having your morning breakfast, you will drive straight to Miombo woodlands for a guided birding walking to look for some unique birds such as Shelley’s sunbirds, Stierlings woodpecker, Miombo Grey tit, Miombo Rock thrush etc. After having your lunch, you will then drive inside Mikumi national park to search for more birds such as African black duck, Eurasian teal, Southern pilchard and Maccoa duck, Common Ostrich, Greater Flamingo and lesser Flamingo, Helmeted Guinea fowl and crested Guinea fowl, Harlequin quail, Scaly Francolin, Hildebrandt’s Francolin, Red necked Francolin etc. In the evening, you will drive to the Vuma hills tented camp for dinner and overnight.

Day 6: Full day birding in Mikumi national park

After having your morning breakfast, you will drive to Mikumi national park to search for a number of birds such as Ring necked dove, Red eyed dove, Speckled pigeon, Denham’s bustard, Black faced sand grouse, Yellow throated sand grouse, Bare faced go away bird, Hartlaub Turaco, Ross’s Turaco, Eastern plantain eater, Dideric cuckoo, Red chested cuckoo, Levaillants’s cuckoo, Black cuckoo, Night jar, Pennant winged night jar etc. Dinner and overnight at Vuma hills tented camp.

Day 7: Transfer from Mikumi to Udzungwa national park

After finishing your breakfast, you will drive towards south wards into Udzungwa and Kilombero flood plains for a memorable afternoon bird watching. Looking for Endemic bird species such as Kilombero weaver, Kilombero cisticola, Dappled throated mountain Robin etc. Dinner and overnight at Udzungwa Twiga hotel.

Day 8: Birding in Kilombero valley Endemics

After having your breakfast, you will hike and foot the east Udzungwa forest to look for forest birds which includes White tailed Cisticola, Kilombero weaver, Kilombero cisticola, Dappled throated mountain Robin etc and also endemic primates such as Red colobus, Procolobus gordonorum, Sanje mangabey cercocebus and the near endemic Kipunji monkeys. Dinner and overnight at Udzungwa Twiga hotel.

Day 9: Udzungwa to Ruaha national park

After having your morning breakfast, you will have a long day drive from Udzungwa to Ruaha national park via Mikumi and Iringa towns into Ruaha while having birding stopovers and game viewing. To bird in Ruaha national park is rewarding since the park has over 574 bird species. Dinner and overnight at Ruaha River lodge.

Day 10: Game viewing and bird watching Ruaha national park

After having your morning breakfast, you will start your full day bird watching in Ruaha national park and the following birds are expected to been seen as Eleonora’s Falcon, Emerald spotted wood dove, Goliath Heron, Long crested Eagles, Namaqua dove, Southern ground hornbill, Tanzanian Red billed hornbill, White billed go away bird, Yellow collared lovebird etc. During the game drive, you will be able to see different types of animals such as crocodiles, giraffes, olive baboons, lions, topis, Elands, cape buffaloes, hippos, impalas, bush bucks, wildebeests, water bucks, monkeys, leopards, Gazelles, greater and lesser Kudu, Cheetahs, Roan & sable, Antelopes, Elephants etc. Dinner and overnight at Ruaha River lodge.
